4. Information of Department:

i. Gene Bank Department:

Collection, conservationof jute and allied fibre germplasm. At present 6050 germplasm were collected from Bangladesh and

other country of the world thosewere conserved in the BJRI gene bank. Gene Bank of the BJRI has two cell room.

One is +40C and another is -200C.

Objectives of the Department:

·    Collection, conservation, characterization, evaluation and documentation of jute, kenaf, mestaand allied fibre germplasm

·         Regeneration and viability assessment of jute, kenaf, mesta and allied fibre germplasm for conservation and maintenance

ii. Cytogenetic Department:

Varietal improvement of jute and allied fibre crops through biotechnological research is the main objective of this department.

The basic objectives of this department are:

·         To improve regeneration protocol of jute, kenaf and mesta through invitro explants culture (micro propagation).

·         To improve karyotype analysis, embryo rescue, pollen culture and protoplast fusion research.

·         To develop and improve jute, kenaf and mesta varieties by targeted gene introduced through genetic transformation.

·         Identification of molecular markers determining biotic, abiotic and desired traits from selected germplasm.

iii. Breeder Seed Department:

Production and distribution of breeder seed for the production foundation as well as certified seed of Jute, Kenaf and

Mesta to different seed growing Government and Non-Government organizations as per requirements.

Objectives of the Department:

·         Production and supply of breeder seed to different government and nongovernment foundation seed growing

organizations as per their requirements.

·         Production of nucleus seed for breeder seed production in the next year.

·         Carryout seed related research for varietal distinctness and uniformity well adopted improved jute and allied fibre crops.

iv. Molecular Biology department:

Departmental Research area:

Molecular Biology Department was established in 2021 to carry out research work on the development of jute, kenaf and

mesta varieties through biotechnology research.

Areas of research:

1. Research on identification of responsible genes for specific traits using sequenced data of jute.

2. Development of demand-based jute and allied fibre genotype using present practiced and newly adopted biotechnological tools.
