1.      

Introduction of the division

The main objective of Pest Management Division, BJRI, Dhaka is to protect Jute and Allied Fibre (JAF) Crops controlling all kinds of diseases and insects and to develop disease and insect tolerant varieties.

2.      

The overall purpose of the division

ü To develop diseases and insect pest management technology of Jute and Allied Fibre (JAF) Crops

ü Evaluation and recommendation of chemical and organic pesticides for control of diseases and insect pests of Jute and Allied Fibre (JAF) Crops.

ü Conduct survey on diseases and insect pest outbreaks of Jute and Allied Fibre (JAF) Crops.

ü Provide training to all those involved in jute cultivation including farmers / NGO workers / JFA / Sub Assistant Agriculture Officer / Upazila Agriculture Officer on identification and control of diseases and insect pests of Jute and Allied Fibre (JAF) Crops.

4.      

Department Information (Entomology Department)

Entomology is one of the branches of Pest Management Division. The main objective of the department is to protect Jute and Allied Fiber (JAF) crops from the attack of all types of insects through integrated control system and to develop insect tolerant varieties.

The specific objectives of the department are as follows:

ü Innovation of pest control management technology in Jute and Allied Fiber (JAF) crops.

ü Evaluation and recommendation of chemical and organic pesticides for control of insect pest in Jute and Allied Fiber (JAF) crops.

ü Conducting survey on insect and outbreak of Jute and Allied Fiber (JAF) crops.

Notable activities:

To provide information to the breeding division by monitoring the insect infestation on the promising lines / varieties of JAF crops in different region of Bangladesh for inventing new varieties.

Screening of germplasm of JAF crops collected from Gene Bank for development of insect tolerant varieties.

To control insects of JAF crops, to test new pesticides, acaricides, organic pesticides, botanical plant extracts, etc., to be recommended for use by farmers’.

To study the life cycle of existing and identified insects in JAF crops and to develop suitable time and techniques for proper control.

Conducting survey activities on insect pest of JAF crops and predicting the outbreak of insect pest.
