Title of the technology: Introduction of the more advanced Garlic-Jute-Fallow cropping pattern as an alternative to the traditional pattern at the farmers' level.

Indroduction: On around 0.017 million acres of land in Bangladesh, the Garlic-Fallow-Fallow cropping pattern is practiced. In the aforementioned land, a new two-crop contained pattern of Garlic-Jute-Fallow can be easily introduced.

Salient features of the technology:

a) A cropping pattern, Garlic-Jute-Fallow, can be easily established in the regions where the land remains fallow for long times during the year.

b) The development of this cropping pattern provides the better possible use of the land, and farmers profit financially due to higher cropping productivity and intensity.

c) By preserving soil organic matter and contributing to the distribution of soil nutrients, the inclusion of jute or kenaf crops in this cropping pattern will improve the fertility of the land.

Suitability of the technology:

The suitability of this pattern was validated in medium-high and medium-low land in the country's central and southern areas between 1988 and 1990.

Economic benefit of the technology and role for livelihood development:

The improved cropping pattern Garlic-Jute-Fallow can increase the income by about 25-28% as compared to the conventional pattern.
