Introduction of improved cropping system Brinjal-Jute-Patit instead of conventional cropping system at farmer level in rainfed uplands. (1991)

Sl. No.

English

1.

Title of the technology: Improved pattern Brinjal-Jute-Fallow introduced at the farmers' level under rainfed upland areas in place of conventional cropping pattern

Year of innovation: 1991

2.

Indroduction: In Bangladesh, this cropping pattern is used on about 0.010 million acres of upland areas. The feasibility of this pattern was evaluated between 1988 and 1990 in the regions of Jessore, Kushtia, Faridpur, and Manikganj.

3.

Salient features of the technology:

a) In rainfed upland areas, where farmers without irrigation facilities typically produce one crop, jute may be easily incorporated into the cropping pattern on these sites, and the cropping intensity will be increased.

b) An increase in soil fertility ensures that the land is used to its full potential.

c) Farmer income rises as cropping intensity is increased.

d) Less cost can result in higher profit.

Suitability of the technology:

The technology is appropriate for regions of Bangladesh in the south, southwest, center, and north where there is a lot of high land but no irrigation facilities. Brinjal-Jute-Fallow cropping system can be easily introduced in place of conventional cropping pattern Brinjal-Fallow-Fallow.

6.

Economic benefit of the technology and role for livelihood development:

When compared to the conventional cropping pattern of Brinjal-Fallow-Fallow, the income of farmers can be increased by about 25–30% by using the improved cropping pattern of Brinjal–Jute–Fallow under rainfed.
